Teeth whitening is nothing new. The first recorded teeth whitening was 4,000 years ago in ancient Egypt! The Egyptians created a whitening paste using ground pumice stone mixed in wine vinegar. Later, the Romans went so far as to use urine to whiten their teeth (gag!). Then barbers in the 1600s filed down teeth and applied an acid to whiten them... and also, sadly, badly erode the teeth.
So while the desire for a whiter smile is centuries old, fortunately we've come a long way with teeth whitening. The technology of today can address stains that are extrinsic (on the outer layer) and intrinsic (deeper layers). Extrinsic stains often come from lifestyle choices--tobacco use,
the foods we eat and drink, or poor dental hygiene. Intrinsic stains are caused by genetic disorders, trauma during tooth development, caries, amalgam restorations, aging, and more.
The most accessible whitening product is whitening toothpaste. It is safe for daily use and available over-the-counter. However, whitening toothpaste only treats extrinsic stains on the outer layer of teeth. This means staining can easily return and that deeper stains will not be addressed.
Dr. Douglas Shafer and our Beaverton dental team offer a
variety of teeth whitening products to address the many types of stains. These different approaches work with a variety of budgets, and use varying techniques depending on the cause of the stain.
