Children's Books About Dental Health

Feb 3 • 2 minute read

It's National Children's Dental Health Month! Your children's dental health is an important part of their overall health. Beaverton family dentist, Dr. Doug Shafer, always says baby teeth are like a practice set, and the hygiene skills they learn now will help protect their smiles all throughout their lives.

We want every kid to have a healthy smile. Here are some children's books our dental team recommends to help your child feel comfortable at the dentist and understand how to care for their teeth:

  • "What If You Had Animal Teeth?" Written by Sandra Markle, Illustrated by Howard McWilliams
This books has fun illustrations and awesome info on the wonders of different animal teeth. It also emphasizes the importance of human teeth, and how to care for them!
  • "The Tooth Book" Written by Dr. Seuss, Illustrated by Joe Mathieu
An oldie but a goodie, this book now comes in a board book format that helps even the littlest ones learn how our teeth help us eat, talk, and more.
  • "The Tooth Book: A Guide to Healthy Teeth and Gums" by Edward Miller"
This is a great, comprehensive tool to teach kids about their oral health. It includes fun and interesting dental facts, and also covers flossing, the effect of sugar, what to do in a dental emergency.
  • "Daniel Goes to the Dentist" Written by Alexandra Cassel Schwartz, Illustrated by Jason Fruchter
This is a great intro to the dentist, especially for a first timer or a kid who might be a little nervous! It gives a nice, clear, and age-appropriate explanation of a dental check up.
  • "Why Should I Brush My Teeth?" Written by Katie Daynes, Illustrated by Marta Alvarez Miguens
Have a kid with a lot of dental questions? Well this book has answers! This board book is great for preschoolers who want to know all about brushing and caring for their teeth.
  • "The Berenstain Bears Visit the Dentist" by Stan and Jan Berenstain
Another classic, this book gives a good introduction of what a dental visit entails. It's great for a child who is scared to visit the dentist.

Prepare your child for their next visit! We love seeing families and children, and we remain committed to giving quality care in a comfortable environment.
