It’s almost time to head back to school! But before class is back in session, here are 8 dental tips to start the new school year off right:

  1. Start the school year with a new toothbrush, and replace it every three months or after a sickness. Good Life Dentistry recommends using a thorough and fun electric toothbrush like a Sonicare for Kids.
  2. Make sure kids are brushing their teeth 2min 2x—two minutes, two times a day. Before school and before bed works great!
  3. Send kids to school with a full water bottle, and avoid sugary drinks like juices and sodas.
  4. Prep tooth-friendly snacks like baby carrots, cheese cubes, and apple slices.
  5. Schedule dental cleanings every six months. The dental hygienists at our Beaverton office are ready to serve everyone in the family!
  6. Floss your small children’s teeth each night, and teach older kids how to do it themselves. Set a challenge to floss every day for the first 3 weeks of school, and start a new habit!
  7. When playing sports, provide a mouthguard for your child. This is especially important for contact sports. Ask how Dr. Shafer can provide a custom mouthguard for your athlete.
  8. Teach children how to care for their braces and retainers. If they wear their retainer case during the day, make sure they bring a retainer case with them to school with their name on it.

Remember, children’s teeth are still developing, and teens already have their adult teeth.  Now is the time to set good dental habits and avoid problems in the future. Parents can show their children how important dental health is, and help protect their smiles the rest of their lives!
